Stonewall Columbus is deeply disappointed by Governor DeWine’s decision to sign Senate Bill 104 into law, a measure that blatantly discriminates against transgender and nonbinary students across Ohio. By forcing individuals to use restrooms and facilities based solely on the sex listed on their birth certificate, this legislation perpetuates stigma, exclusion, and harm against some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
Transgender and nonbinary youth deserve the same dignity, respect, and safety as their cis-gender peers. This law not only denies them the ability to live authentically but also places them at greater risk for harassment and violence. Research has consistently shown that transgender individuals are far more likely to experience harm in public restrooms than to cause it, making the claims of safety used to justify this bill both unfounded and deeply harmful.
SB 104 represents a step backward for Ohio, prioritizing fear over facts and exclusion over inclusion. It is a stark reminder of the work that remains to ensure our state becomes a place where every student—regardless of gender identity—feels safe, supported, and seen.
Stonewall Columbus reaffirms its commitment to supporting the transgender and nonbinary community advocating for policies that protect their rights. We will continue to work alongside our community partners, accomplices, allies, and advocates to challenge discrimination and build a future where every LGBTQ+ person in Ohio can thrive without fear or barriers to their authenticity–their Pride.
We urge our local leaders, community members, and allies to join us in opposing this harmful law and fighting for an Ohio that values the safety, dignity, and inclusion of all its residents. Together, we can and must do better for our youth.
