Stonewall Columbus continues to stand with Kaleidoscope Youth Center (KYC) as the organization navigates a difficult financial period.
KYC has long been an essential part of Central Ohio’s LGBTQ+ ecosystem, particularly for LGBTQIA+ youth. We recognize the seriousness of this moment and the impact it has on the young people, staff, and families who rely on that work every day.
We are in active conversation with KYC leadership about how Stonewall can be supportive in this moment, and about what even closer collaboration may look like moving forward. We believe deeply that the strength of our community depends on the strength of the institutions that serve it, and that moments like this call for care, honesty, and partnership.
We also want to provide clarity on a question we know some in the community may be asking. The recent Franklin County funding awarded to Stonewall Columbus was approved for specific Stonewall-led initiatives, including Pride production, expanded programming, and the launch of workforce development efforts. Because those funds were designated for defined purposes, they cannot be redirected or regranted by Stonewall to support KYC.
That clarity does not change our commitment. We will continue to stay in close communication with KYC leadership, explore responsible ways to be helpful, and consider where stronger alignment or future collaborative work may make sense in service to the broader LGBTQ+ community.
We know that when one LGBTQ+ institution is under strain, the effects are felt across the entire community. This is a moment for care, coordination, and collective responsibility—and we remain committed to doing our part.
With respect, pride, and solidarity,
Densil R. Porteous (he/they), Executive Director
Stonewall Columbus
