Stonewall Columbus recognizes and supports Kaleidoscope Youth Center following their recent announcement regarding staffing changes and the pause of planned expansion efforts.
The decision to reduce staff and refocus organizational priorities is never easy. It reflects the very real funding challenges facing LGBTQ+ organizations across the country. We acknowledge the impact of this moment on the staff members affected and recognize the care with which KYC has approached this transition.
For decades, Kaleidoscope Youth Center has been a critical resource for LGBTQIA+ youth in Central Ohio and beyond—providing not only programs and services, but a consistent space of belonging, safety, and affirmation. That work continues to be essential–even more in these challenging times.
We are encouraged by KYC’s commitment to sustaining its core services, including its drop-in center, behavioral health offerings, and advocacy efforts. These are lifelines for young people navigating identity, community, and well-being.
This moment is also a reminder of the broader landscape. LGBTQ+ organizations are increasingly being asked to do more with fewer resources, even as demand for services continues to grow. Ensuring the long-term sustainability of these institutions requires ongoing investment—from individuals, partners, and the community at large.
Stonewall Columbus is committed to working alongside KYC and other community partners to support LGBTQ+ individuals across Central Ohio. Our collective impact depends on the strength of our ecosystem—and on our ability to show up for one another in moments like this.
We encourage our community to continue supporting Kaleidoscope Youth Center and the vital work they provide to LGBTQIA+ youth.
With respect and solidarity,
Densil R. Porteous (he/they), Executive Director
Stonewall Columbus
