Today, on World AIDS Day, we honor the resilience and strength of the LGBTQ+ community in the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact the epidemic has had on our community and the enduring commitment required to combat it.
At Stonewall Columbus, we are dedicated to advancing HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, and support through our Red [Space] initiative. This program provides an affirming environment for the queer community to learn about and engage with HIV/STI wellness. With a primary focus on creating programming and resource connections for underrepresented BIPoC queer populations in and around Columbus and Central Ohio, Red [Space] offers:
- Rapid Testing: On-site or community-based HIV testing opportunities.
- Stonewall Connects: One-to-one resource connections through our HIV/STI Community Health & Wellness Navigator.
- Educational Programming: Affinity spaces and community outreach initiatives.
Through Red [Space], we strive to empower individuals with knowledge and resources, fostering a community where everyone can thrive.
The statistics underscore the critical need for our efforts:
- In 2022, gay and bisexual men accounted for 70% of new HIV diagnoses in the United States (CDC).
- In 2022, transgender individuals accounted for 2% (928) of the 37,981 new HIV diagnoses in the United States (CDC: HIV Among Transgender People).
- Among transgender people diagnosed with HIV in 2022, 40% were Black/African American, and 38% were Hispanic/Latino (CDC: HIV Surveillance Report).
As we reflect on the legacy of our community’s fight against HIV/AIDS, we remember those we’ve lost and reaffirm our commitment to supporting those living with HIV. Together, we continue to work towards a future free from stigma and discrimination, where comprehensive care and education are accessible to all.
You can support this critical work by making a gift to Stonewall Columbus today. Your donation helps sustain programs like Red [Space], ensuring that we can continue to provide vital resources, education, and care to those who need it most.
Let’s stand together, give generously, and continuing the fight for health equity and justice.
