Karla Rothan, Interim Center Director at Stonewall Columbus, announced today that Stonewall will feature the work of local artist Linda Apple and local musician Khrysso Heart LeFey on the night of the October Gallery Hop, October 7, from 6 to 10 PM at the Stonewall Community Center on High, 1160 N. High St.at the corner of Fourth Ave.
Admission to the show is free.
Artist Linda Apple
“Apple has been an anchor in the Columbus arts community,” says Rothan, who has “been wanting to feature her work since I met her 15 years ago.” Apple’s own history as a gallery owner and exhibitor extends years before the 1984 beginnings of the Hop.
Apple grew up in southern Ohio before receiving a scholarship to the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1964. Her formal education has led her from California to Rome , with stops for private learning all over the US and Western Europe.
Her work has always contained aspects of visionary, fantasy and Science Fiction, often with a touch of whimsy.
Perhaps best known as a painter, thanks to works such as the mural at Whole World Pizza in Clintonville, Apple focuses her energy these days on “Art Dolls.” She has created a fantastical world of characters that live in a wonderful place called Appleshire.
Still, her paintings and sculptures, which are exhibited in prominent collections far and wide, remain a significant portion of her life’s work.
Musician Khrysso Heart LeFey
Khrysso Heart LeFey, is a familiar face at Stonewall Columbus volunteering as administrative assistant and answering the center’s hotline several days a week. Many may remember him from the early 1990’s as Chris Wagner, Program Development Director for Stonewall Columbus. In 1992, Khrysso left the organization to pursue a career as a folk musician.
A singer primarily, he usually accompanies his lyric baritone voice on 12-string guitar or fretted dulcimer. For the Apple exhibit, he plans to focus on dulcimer instrumentals, which, he says, provide the best ambiance for such events.
“The word ‘dulcimer’ means ‘sweet music,” he says, “and will serve as a very appropriate backdrop for Linda’s gently spiritual imagery.”
Khrysso sits on the board of the Columbus Folk Music Society and the steering committee of the Central Ohio Folk Festival.
