Today, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine vetoed House Bill 68, legislation that would have significantly impacted the availability of gender-affirming care in our state. We applauded the Governor for his decision, which reflected thoughtful consideration of diverse perspectives, especially those of parents and healthcare professionals.
House Bill 68 proposed restrictions on vital gender-affirming care, an essential service that is often lifesaving for transgender individuals. Governor DeWine rightly recognized that such personal health decisions should not be legislated by the state but should remain with those who understand and love the children most—their families and doctors.
The Governor’s stance on prioritizing life and humanity is commendable. His acknowledgment of the critical role of parental guidance in these complex and personal matters aligns with our advocacy for informed, compassionate care.
Stonewall Columbus stands ready to support the State and the Governor’s office by providing resources, education, and guidance on gender-affirming care. We encourage community members and allies to connect with us, and organizations like Equality Ohio, as we strive to ensure that transgender Ohioans receive the care they need.
We are dedicated to working collaboratively with state leaders and the medical community to promote the health and well-being of our transgender community members. Our efforts will continue to focus on safeguarding access to gender-affirming care and supporting the families making these essential decisions.
We acknowledge Governor DeWine for his stance in protecting the rights of families during these challenging times. Together, we will work towards a future where all Ohioans can thrive.
