Stonewall Columbus and Kaleidoscope Youth Coalition are pleased to be a part of the annual Columbus International Film and Video Festival, aka The Chris Awards, as a satellite location for a screening entered by the National Film Board of Canada as part of the festival. As part of the Chris Awards event, Stonewall and KYC will be hosting a free showing of “Little Sister’s vs. Big Brother,” based on a passion for books and commitment to free speech and the fight by Little Sister’s Bookstore in Canada to become a beacon for those who hold books near and freedom dear. The film will be screened on Thursday, November 11th at 7:00 PM at the Stonewall Community Center located at 1160 N. High Street. This event is free and open to anyone. In Little Sister’s vs. Big Brother, Director/Writer/Co-producer Aerlyn Weissman (Forbidden Love) brings us the story of a high stakes legal drama and a small bookstore’s fight for respect. Shooting since 1994, Weissman has captured the key moments in the Little Sister’s battle against censorship court decisions, book seizures, moments of personal courage and shocking violence inflicted on Vancouver’s gay community. Says director Aerlyn Weissman.
“Today the experiences of a small gay Vancouver bookstore have become central concerns for all of us. Terrorism that targets specific communities, the loss of fundamental civil liberties in the name of morality or national security, secret government censorship and surveillance these issues are now on front pages around the world.”
Since its inception in 1952, the object of the Film Council which sponsors the Festival, has been to encourage and promote the use of 16mm motion pictures and, subsequently, video tape in all forms of education and communication, not only in the local community but throughout the world. During these many years of continuous operation, the Festival has honored thousands of film and video producers. The Festival has grown in scope, becoming international in 1972, in the late 80’s adding video, and in 1997 adding the CD ROM format.
