Yesterday, March 25, the Ohio House passed H.B. 249.
This legislation has raised significant concerns across our community, particularly for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming individuals whose visibility and expression are too often subject to misunderstanding and debate.
Over the past several weeks, individuals from across Ohio showed up to share their perspectives—through testimony, advocacy, and public engagement. Those voices reflected lived experience, care, and a deep investment in the well-being of our communities.
That matters.
This vote represents movement, but it is not the end of the legislative process.
H.B. 249 now moves to the Ohio Senate, where there will be additional opportunity for review, dialogue, and public input. What happens next will depend not only on legislative process, but on continued engagement from communities, advocates, and partners across the state.
At Stonewall Columbus, our position remains clear.
We believe in a community where individuals are able to live openly and authentically—where expression is not restricted, and where people are not made to feel that their presence in public life is conditional.
In the coming weeks, we will:
- Stay engaged with statewide partners tracking this legislation–like Equality Ohio and TransOhio
- Share updates and relevant information as the bill moves through the Senate
- Continue to ensure our community knows where to turn for support and resources
For those who are asking what they can do: stay informed, stay connected, and continue to show up in ways that are meaningful to you. Advocacy takes many forms, and each plays a role in shaping what comes next.
We recognize that this moment is creating uncertainty for many in numerous areas.
For some, this may raise questions about safety, visibility, and belonging. It is important to say: you are not alone.
Stonewall will continue to show up—by strengthening connections, supporting those who need it, and working alongside partners to ensure that our community remains visible, supported, and able to thrive.
This moment does not change who we are as a community. And this moment does not change Stonewall’s commitment to this community.
With care,
Densil R. Porteous (he/they), Executive Director
