Each year on March 31, we recognize International Transgender Day of Visibility. On this day we affirm our unwavering support and solidarity with the transgender community, acknowledging the courage and resilience of transgender individuals who live their truth in the face of adversity and discrimination.
“There are over 1.6 million trans, non-binary and gender-expansive youth (age 13+) and adults across the United States. We are parents and family members. We are your coworkers, your neighbors and your friends. We are a diverse community, representing all racial and ethnic backgrounds as well as all faith traditions.” HRC
And, while the transgender community has made significant progress in societal understanding in recent years, with more visibility than ever before, we are still fighting for basic human rights for the community. Today we are experiencing significant political attacks by those legislating hate in the states, like here in Ohio, and in Congress. We continue to face an ongoing epidemic of fatal violence, especially against Black and Brown transgender women.
At Stonewall Columbus, we understand the vital importance of visibility as a catalyst for change.
Visibility not only challenges the societal norms and misconceptions that lead to transphobia but also empowers and inspires others in the transgender community–we must live out loud. It is a testament to the strength and diversity of human identity, and a reminder that every person deserves to live openly and authentically.
We must be committed to creating a world where every transgender individual can thrive without fear of prejudice or violence. Our mission extends beyond mere recognition; it is about active and ongoing advocacy for the rights, dignity, and equality of transgender people. We strive to provide a safe and supportive environment where transgender voices are heard and valued, and where their contributions to our community and society are celebrated.
Today, and every day, we stand in solidarity with the transgender community.
We call upon allies, policymakers, and community leaders to join us in this vital work. Let’s commit to educating ourselves and others, advocating for inclusive policies, and supporting transgender individuals in all spheres of life. It’s not just about recognizing the rights and struggles of the transgender community; it’s about actively participating in the journey towards full equality and acceptance.
Together, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate world where everyone has the opportunity to be seen, heard, and respected for who they are. On International Transgender Day of Visibility, let us affirm our commitment to our transgender community members and celebrate the incredible resilience and diversity of the transgender community.
