Response has been overwhelming for the HRC Columbus March for Equality on Saturday, December 4th during the Short North Holiday Hop. Nearly 600 people signed up to wear a sweatshirt emblazoned with “Ohio-The Heart of Discrimination” and march down High Street to remind Ohioans that the fight over marriage equality is not over. Please join us on Saturday even if you did not sign up in time to get a sweatshirt. The more people we have marching the greater the statement we will be making. And don’t let a little chill in the air or the prospects of a hot party keep you away. We’ll be wrapped up by 9 pm with lots of time for other activities. This march is important!
Remember:
- Arrive between 7 and 7:45 pm at Donatos Pizzeria at the corner of First and High Streets to pick up your sweatshirt. We are asking $5 for the sweatshirt but if you can give a little more it would be appreciated to help defray the costs of this march. Cash in appreciated. Please do not pick up a sweatshirt if you did not order one. We may have a few extras which we will distribute at the end.
- There will be pizza available on a first come first served basis from Donatos
- Start lining up at 7:45. We will step off at 8 pm and march to the Cap at Union Station wearing our sweatshirts to demonstrate our outrage over State Issue 1’s passage
- There will be a brief rally at the Cap where we will be joined by the Capital Pride Marching Band.
Here are a few tips to make the evening successful:
- Arrive early. Gallery Hop Saturdays are typically busy but Holiday Hop is the most highly attended of the year. Parking is at a premium so try to car pool with friends.
- Bundle up. Weather.com is predicting dry conditions with a low of 35°F. Dress in layers with the “Ohio The Heart of Discrimination” sweatshirt being the final layer
- Obey traffic laws. During the march please be sure to obey all traffic signals and cross walks. This march is to make the impact of Issue 1 on the GLBT community highly visible but we want to do so following the law.
- Respect shops & restaurants. Again, this march is to express our anger, but we are not trying to hinder Short North businesses, in fact many may be supporting us that evening by wearing our sweatshirt and putting signs in their windows. So, don’t block doorways or hinder access to shops and restaurants
See you Saturday the 4th!
