We want to address recent developments regarding some of our corporate partners and their decisions to withdraw support or modify their commitments to the LGBTQ+ community. We acknowledge the concerns raised by our community about recent decisions made by our partners, we believe in engaging in constructive dialogue and seeking common ground. Our approach is to hold our partners accountable while also recognizing the positive impact they have had in the past.
The recent wave of pushback and organized attacks against businesses like Bud Light/Anheuser-Busch and Target by extremist groups serves as a wake-up call for all companies that support the LGBTQ+ community. These attacks, fueled by hate and designed to prevent LGBTQ+ inclusion and representation, have become all too familiar. They aim to silence our allies and accomplices, are rooted in erasing our community, and undermine the progress we have made.
At Stonewall Columbus, we value the longstanding support we have received from companies like Target and Bud Light/Anheuser-Busch, who have been strong allies of the LGBTQ+ community. Their past contributions and commitment to our cause have played a vital role in advancing equality, and we appreciate their previous support of our Pride 365 efforts.
We understand that corporations often face challenges and pressures that impact their decision-making process. In recent times, there has been an unfortunate rise in backlash and attempts to undermine LGBTQ+ rights. This has created a challenging environment for companies to navigate.
We do encourage our partners to stand firm.
Standing firm in your values is not only the right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense. Research consistently shows that when a brand publicly supports and actively works towards expanding and protecting LGBTQ+ rights, Americans are more likely to buy or use their products and services. Younger generations, in particular, are significantly more inclined to support companies that demonstrate a commitment to LGBTQ+ rights.
We are committed to continuing open and transparent conversations with our corporate partners to address these concerns and reaffirm our shared values. We believe that constructive engagement and education can lead to positive change and a deeper understanding of the needs of the LGBTQ+ community.
Stonewall Columbus remains committed to advocating for equality, equity, and liberation for all LGBTQ+ individuals. We will continue our work to create a safer and inclusive community where everyone can thrive. We encourage our community and allies to stand with us in holding businesses accountable, but also acknowledge where they have taken correct actions, so we can create a future where LGBTQ+ rights are protected and celebrated while fostering an environment of inclusivity and progress.
With pride,
Densil R. Porteous (he/they)
