This June, Stonewall Columbus proudly celebrates the 10th anniversary of the historic Supreme Court decision on marriage equality—a landmark ruling affirming that love is love, and every individual deserves the dignity, recognition, and equal rights afforded by marriage.
In July 2015, in partnership with the City of Columbus, we joyfully commemorated this groundbreaking moment with “Vowed & Proud,” a moving ceremony officiated by then-Mayor Michael B. Coleman. On that unforgettable day, 15 couples took their vows, standing proudly before friends, family, and our supportive community. Their union symbolized not only their personal commitment to each other but also our community’s decades-long fight for equality and visibility.
As we mark a decade since marriage equality became law, we honor the courage, resilience, and dedication of the countless advocates who made this victory possible. We remember the joy that filled the hearts of couples across the nation, who could finally celebrate their love openly, equally, and proudly.
Yet, even as we celebrate, we acknowledge the continued challenges faced by many in our LGBTQ+ community. Equality in marriage was a monumental victory, but it was one step in a larger journey toward full equality, protection, and acceptance.
Today, we reaffirm our commitment to continuing the fight for equity, justice, and liberation for all LGBTQ+ people. Let this 10-year milestone inspire us to stay vocal, visible, and vigilant in our advocacy and community-building efforts.
Happy 10th Anniversary of Marriage Equality. Here’s to continued progress, love, and pride—today and always.
