On Monday December 15, Columbus City Council officially named the inaugural members of the City of Columbus LGBTQ+ Affairs Commission. This moment marks an important step forward for our city—one rooted in years of advocacy, organizing, listening, and persistence by LGBTQ+ residents and allies who have long called for formal representation within city government.
The creation of this Commission is about more than structure; it is about recognition. It acknowledges that LGBTQ+ people are woven into every neighborhood, every profession, every family across Columbus—and that our lived experiences deserve to inform public policy, civic decision-making, and the future of this city.
Stonewall Columbus has supported the vision of an LGBTQ+ Affairs Commission from the very beginning. We believe deeply in the power of sustained, community-informed advisory bodies—especially ones charged with elevating voices that have historically been excluded from government processes. This Commission has the potential to serve as a bridge between lived experience and civic action, ensuring that equity, dignity, and inclusion are not abstract ideals but operational priorities.
As the Commission begins its work, we recognize that success will require care, collaboration, and vigilance. Advisory bodies are strongest when they remain accountable to the communities they serve, when they listen broadly, and when they are empowered to speak honestly about both progress and gaps. Stonewall Columbus is committed to being a partner in this work—offering perspective, institutional memory, and support as the Commission finds its footing and shapes its impact.
We also want to acknowledge the Commissioners who have stepped forward to serve. This work is both an honor and a responsibility. We thank each of you for lending your time, insight, and leadership at a moment when LGBTQ+ communities—locally and nationally—continue to navigate both opportunity and challenge.
This Commission represents a promise: that LGBTQ+ people will not simply be spoken about, but spoken with; that policy will be informed by lived experience; and that our city will continue striving toward a future where all people are seen, valued, and able to thrive.
We look forward to working alongside the LGBTQ+ Affairs Commission in the months and years ahead—and to continuing the work of building a Columbus that reflects the full spectrum of its people.
With pride and purpose,
Densil R. Porteous (he/they)
