Vowed & Proud

“What an incredible weekend for the city of Columbus and the happy couples who legally married at the Portman Plaza at City Hall on Saturday, July 11th, 2015. Mayor Michael B. Coleman has always been a champion for civil rights and this weekend, he left a powerful legacy as he married thirteen LGBTQ couples in an historic ceremony.  It was just two weeks ago that the Supreme Court of the United States handed down the decision that would bring marriage equality to Ohio and the nation.  Mayor Coleman wasted no time creating a significant event that would support that decision.  The leadership and members of Stonewall Columbus are so very grateful that he asked to partner with our local nonprofit organization to get the job done. Hundreds of people packed the plaza to celebrate the couples and their love for one another.

Over the past two weeks we have heard reports of other cities that have not been so open and affirming when it comes to marriage equality. We have heard of protests by citizens, judges and even city workers who would rather quit their jobs than issue a marriage license to an LGBTQ couple.  This is not true for Columbus, Ohio. We live in a city that values every citizen and wants each of us to be able to live healthy and happy lives. That openness and fairness doesn’t just happen, it comes from the top down. Mayor Coleman has worked tirelessly to set a tone of inclusiveness for our city and his efforts are to be commended and cherished.” – Karla Rothan, Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus

Congrats to all the lucky couples!
