Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), we at Stonewall Columbus pause to honor and remember the lives of transgender individuals taken from us—far too soon. Since its inception in 1999, this day has served as a solemn reminder of the violence and discrimination faced by the transgender community. It is a day to reflect on the humanity, dignity, and potential of those we’ve lost and to stand in unwavering solidarity with our transgender siblings.
This year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance comes at a time when the legislative landscape has become increasingly hostile to transgender individuals across the United States. In 2024 alone, we have witnessed a record number of anti-transgender bills introduced in state legislatures. These bills target essential aspects of life, including access to affirming healthcare, participation in sports, and the ability to use public facilities that align with one’s gender identity. Such policies not only endanger transgender individuals but also perpetuate harmful stigma and discrimination.
Transgender youth are especially under attack, with laws in several states banning gender-affirming care or criminalizing healthcare providers who offer this vital support. These measures disregard the overwhelming evidence that gender-affirming care saves lives. Meanwhile, anti-trans sports bans and restrictions on the rights of transgender students to express their identities at school further marginalize and isolate transgender young people.
We know that systemic violence disproportionately impacts Black, Indigenous, and people of color within the transgender community, particularly Black transgender women. This intersection of racism and transphobia exacerbates vulnerability to violence and discrimination, creating an urgent need for comprehensive action and allyship.
At Stonewall Columbus, we affirm our commitment to creating spaces where transgender and nonbinary individuals feel valued, supported, and safe. We remain dedicated to fighting back against these legislative attacks, advocating for inclusive policies, supporting community-building efforts, and ensuring that resources are accessible for those who need them.
Transgender Day of Remembrance is not just about mourning lives lost—it IS a call to action. Now, more than ever, it serves to remind us of the ongoing fight against transphobia and systemic violence. It compels us to amplify transgender voices, advocate for their rights, and actively work towards a world where transgender individuals can live openly, authentically, and safely.
As we remember the lives of those we’ve lost, let us also celebrate the resilience and strength of the transgender community. Let this day inspire us to act—not just today, but every day—to fight for equity, compassion, and liberation for all.
We stand with you. We see you. We honor you.
In solidarity,
Stonewall Columbus
