Stonewall Columbus Honors the Life and Legacy of Rupert “Twink” Starr
Columbus, OH — November 7, 2024 — It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Rupert “Twink” Starr, a notable member of the LGBTQ+ community and a distinguished World War II veteran. Twink, who passed away on Election Day, November 5, leaves behind an inspiring legacy of resilience, advocacy, and courage. He was 102 years old.
Twink’s life was marked by exceptional service and commitment to his country and his community. As a young soldier in World War II, he served with distinction in the Battle of the Bulge, enduring months as a prisoner of war. Upon returning home, Twink transitioned from military hero to a dedicated LGBTQ+ rights advocate, playing a pivotal role in the fight to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which prevented LGBTQ+ individuals from serving openly in the U.S. armed forces.
In recognition of his commitment and enduring contributions, Stonewall Columbus named Twink the Grand Marshal of the Pride Parade in 2009, honoring his influence and dedication to equality. Ten years ago, in 2014, he was again celebrated as a featured veteran during our LGBTQ Veterans Recognition Month. Twink’s unwavering dedication to equality and justice left an indelible mark on the LGBTQ+ community and the nation at large.
“Twink’s dedication to both his country and the LGBTQ+ community exemplifies the true spirit of resilience and advocacy. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” said Densil Porteous, Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus.
Stonewall Columbus will honor Twink’s remarkable life and contributions during our annual Veterans Recognition Program on November 14. We invite the community to join us as we pay tribute to a true trailblazer whose life’s work will continue to inspire the fight for a more inclusive and just society.
