As the eleventh Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus, I stand on the shoulders of leaders and a resilient community that has navigated over four decades of social change.
The role of the Stonewall Columbus Executive Director has evolved from a manager of processes to an executive practitioner of community, culture, and business. The type of guide the Stonewall organization has needed has evolved much like our LGBTQ+/Queer community here in Columbus, across Central Ohio, and beyond. As the Executive Director for Stonewall Columbus, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey this organization has embarked on over the past several years. In reflecting on our journey, I am struck by Stonewall’s ability to adapt and respond to the evolving needs of our community. This adaptability is our strength, anchoring us as we face the dual realities of significant progress in LGBTQ+ rights and the persistent challenges that underscore the urgency of our mission.
Witnessing the evolution of Stonewall is a testament to our resilience—our queer community’s resilience. I know this because I’ve also observed the ongoing evolution of the queer community in Central Ohio and beyond.
With the Columbus metro area doubling in size since 1981, the canvas of our mission—“to increase visibility, inclusion, and connection for the LGBTQ+ community”—has expanded exponentially, embracing a rich tapestry of intersectional identities. In 2023, beyond our organizational boundaries, the LGBTQ+ landscape continued to evolve. Nationally and globally, we’ve seen significant strides in LGBTQ+ rights and representation, alongside challenges that remind us of the work still ahead. Our mission to increase visibility, inclusion, and connection for the LGBTQ+ community has never been more relevant.
In alignment with our values of History, Visibility, Inclusion, Connection, and Accountability, we’ve worked tirelessly to make Stonewall Columbus a center that truly reflects the diversity and intersectionality of our community.
As we look towards the future, I am filled with optimism. Our journey towards making Stonewall Columbus a beacon for the LGBTQ+ community in the 14th largest city in the country continues. The path may be long and winding, but with our collective efforts and dedication, I am confident we will realize our vision, creating a legacy that resonates with every facet of our vibrant community.
Let us unite in fortifying Stonewall Columbus to be more than an organization that not only stands the test of time but shines as a model of inclusivity, representation, and empowerment for LGBTQ+ communities everywhere.
With pride and anticipation for our shared future,
Densil Porteous
Executive Director
