June 11, 2023 — Densil Porteous, Executive Director speech at Upper Arlington Pride
Hello, my name is Densil Porteous and I use he/they pronouns; I have the honor of serving as Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus.
For over four decades, Stonewall Columbus has been a pillar of support and empowerment for the queer community. In addition to an array of evolving programming Stonewall produces Columbus’ Pride march and events–I hope we’ll see you next weekend along High Street or at Goodale Park!
While I stand before you today as the Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus, I stand here more importantly, as a queer Black immigrant who is married to my loving partner and the proud parent of a vibrant six-year-old—because it is my story that matters more than my title or my role in the community.
I was asked to speak a little bit about what gives me hope for the future–and this seemed slightly challenging when this time in our shared experiences as humans seems so bleak. However, in the face of unprecedented challenges and a surge in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and hate, it is essential for us to find hope and resilience in the midst of adversity in order to keep going, to keep motivated–and there is hope in our stories…in who we are.
First and foremost, what gives me hope for the future is the power of our community—the LGBTQ+ community stands united, resilient, and unwavering in the face of discrimination. Together, we have weathered storms and fought battles throughout history, and we will continue to do so.
Our collective strength lies in our diversity, our ability to come together across intersections, and our commitment to stand up for one another.
My hope is also inspired by the younger generation—the fierce, determined, and unapologetically authentic individuals who are leading the way towards a more inclusive and accepting world. I see the joy in the eyes of my daughter, who is growing up in a world where she can be who she chooses and live as her true self without apology.
It is through our support and guidance that we empower the next generation to create a future that is even brighter and more inclusive than the one we envision today.
My hope resides in the allies and accomplices who walk alongside us, amplifying our voices and fighting for our rights. They recognize that equality and justice are not limited to one community but are intertwined with the broader struggle for human rights.
With their support, we can break down barriers, challenge oppressive systems, and build a society where everyone is free to live authentically and without fear.
As we confront the alarming rise in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and rhetoric, it is crucial that we draw strength from queer history. We have faced adversity before, and we have triumphed. We are the descendants of the brave individuals who fought during the Stonewall Uprisings, paving the way for the progress we have achieved. We must honor their legacy by continuing to stand up, speak out, and refuse to be silenced.
In our fight for equality and liberation we must also recognize that our struggles are interconnected. We cannot achieve true liberation without acknowledging the intersecting identities and challenges faced by our community members. We must fight for racial justice, gender equality, immigrant rights, and economic empowerment, knowing that the liberation of one is inseparable from the liberation of all.
Finally, hope resides in our resilience. We have overcome adversity time and time again, and we will not be deterred. Our history is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and love. We will continue to build safer spaces, support one another, and celebrate our intersectional identities with pride.
As we gather here today, surrounded by love, support, and unity, let us remember that our fight is not over. We have come far, but there is still work to be done.
Together, we will push back against discrimination, dismantle oppressive systems, and create a future where every individual—regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or background—can thrive and live with dignity.
Let us draw strength from one another, from the legacy of pioneers like Marsha P. Johnson, Slyvia Rivera, Bayard Rustin, Harvey Milk and from the knowledge that hope is not lost.
Hope is alive within each and every one of us…
Hope is at the core of who we are…
Hope should be guiding us on this journey towards a more equitable, accepting, and inclusive world.
Our hope is our pride.
Thank you, and Happy Pride!
