Columbus, OH — Stonewall Columbus will host a public dedication ceremony for its newly awarded Ohio Historical Marker on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the Stonewall Columbus Community Center, 1160 N High Street.
The Ohio Historical Marker program recognized Stonewall Columbus for its pivotal role in advancing LGBTQ+ rights and community building since its founding in 1981. The marker commemorates the organization’s early efforts in organizing Columbus’ first Pride march, its advocacy for legislative reform, and its continued commitment to fostering education, visibility, and celebration of Central Ohio’s LGBTQ+ community.
“This marker is more than a symbol of our past; it’s a beacon for the future,” said Densil Porteous, ExecutiveDirector of Stonewall Columbus. “It honors the generations who built this movement and reminds us of the ongoing work to ensure equity, affirmation, and belonging for all LGBTQ+ people in our community.”
The dedication ceremony will feature remarks from community leaders, reflections on Stonewall Columbus’ history, and opportunities for the public to engage with the Community Center in the Short North Arts District.
“This recognition stands as a testament to the strength of our community,” added K. Terry Smith, President ofthe Board of Trustees. “Stonewall Columbus has been—and will continue to be—a catalyst for inclusion.”
The Stonewall Columbus Historical Marker is one of only a handful in Ohio dedicated to LGBTQ+ history, underscoring the importance of preserving and uplifting queer stories as part of the state’s shared heritage.
The event is free and open to the public.
