Intersex Awareness Day has always been a protest. October 26th marks the anniversary of the first public demonstration by intersex people in the United States. In 1996, a small group gathered in Boston to protest at the American Academy of Pediatrics’ annual conference. Together with the support of transgender allies, the group protested the surgical “correction” of intersex infants’ genital differences. Intersex adults demanded the right to make their own choices about their own bodies.
