Monkeypox/hMPX is circulating in our community, LGBTQ+, and we want to make sure you have the info you need about what’s going on.
- An ongoing outbreak of hMPX, a viral disease, was confirmed in May 2022. The initial cluster of cases was found in the United Kingdom, where the first case was detected on May 6, 2022 in an individual with travel links to Nigeria.

- Aug 04, 2022: “The Biden administration on Thursday declared monkeypox a public health emergency, with cases on the rise across the US. Since the first US monkeypox case was identified in mid-May, more than 6,600 probable or confirmed cases have been detected in the United States. Cases have been identified in every state except Montana and Wyoming.” (CNN)
Symptoms often start with flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, and fatigue, but not everyone has these symptoms. 1 to 3 days later, people may get a rash or “blisters” on the face, arms, legs, hands, feet, and genital and anal areas – the genital/anal rash appear to be very common during this outbreak. It usually takes around 5 to 14 days after any exposure for symptoms to appear (the “incubation period”).
