SUMMARY:Book Signing with Pastor Joelle Henneman
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 1\n6:00pm-7:00pm\nStonewall Columbus \nAuthor bio: Dr. Joelle Henneman (she/her/hers) serves as the Senior Pastor of the United Methodist Church for All People. Her passion for ministry comes in widening the circle of God’s love to include all people. She has spent the last 15 years in relationship with people experiencing homelessness and living in poverty. She recently graduated with her Doctor of Ministry from Pacific School of Religion where she focused on transgender leadership. Joelle posts daily at TransPreacher.com on topics of faith\, culture\, and politics. \nAbout the book: Transgender people are often treated like an issue to be debated\, leaving us feeling that we need to defend ourselves. Instead\, this book illustrates that gender-diverse people have unique gifts to offer the world. Our experiences have empowered us to bring distinctive perspectives. This book is a call to living boldly and authentically and is for any person seeking to operate from their true self.

DESCRIPTION:National Coming Out Day is observed annually on October 11. It is a day that advocates for the LGBTQ+ community\, raises awareness about their civil rights\, and aims to fight against homophobia. Although it is up to each person to decide when they are ready to come out\, National Coming Out Day encourages individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ to share their identity with friends and family\, and it also encourages friends and family to be supportive. This is also a day for LGBTQ+ people to be out and proud\, and display the community’s symbols\, such as the pride rainbow flag. \nBackground\nOn October 11\, 1987\, thousands participated in the National March for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Washington\, in a display of support for the LGBTQ+ community. This was a huge event for the community and proved to be crucial in the fight for gay\, lesbian\, and transgender rights. On the first anniversary of the March in 1988\, Rob Eichberg and Jean O’Leary founded National Coming Out Day\, to be observed annually on the day of the march. One of their goals was to show everyone that they probably already knew someone whom they loved and respected who identified as LGBTQ+\, which\, in their opinion\, was a huge factor in fighting homophobia. \nMany public figures and celebrities have been inspired by this day to come out and openly share with the world that they are LGBTQ+. Every year the Human Rights Campaign sponsors National Coming Out Day\, and until 2014\, there was a different theme for every year. \nThe first time that National Coming Out Day happened\, only eighteen states participated in celebrating it. Ever since\, the holiday has grown in popularity\, and it is now commemorated internationally. \nNational Coming Out Day is a very important day for the LGBTQ+ community – it educates people on one of the biggest and most important movements in history\, the fight for LGBTQ+ rights\, and it garners allies for the cause. It also celebrates diversity\, which is very important when fighting discrimination and homophobia\, and it inspires people to make the life-changing decision of sharing their true selves with the world. However\, it is important to acknowledge that it is not always safe for LGBTQ+ individuals to come out to their communities\, and no one should be forced to do so. \nWhat to do on National Coming Out Day\nIf you identify as LGBTQ+ and feel comfortable and safe doing so\, today is the perfect day to show your pride in being a part of the community. If you are not ready to come out publicly\, and/or to your friends and family\, there are many LGBTQ+ organizations that you can think about joining to meet more people in the community\, and have some kind of support network of people who understand what you are going through. \nIf you want to be an ally\, support and donate to LGBTQ+ organizations and take part in marches\, protests\, and demonstrations. Make the LGBTQ+ people in your life feel loved and accepted. \nDONATE TO STONEWALL COLUMBUS TODAY

My name is Gabe and I’m beyond thrilled to join Stonewall Columbus as the Adventure Pride Facilitator. I am a Columbus native and lived in Boston for 10 years before returning to my home state to live my exuberant queer life here in the Midwest. I currently live in the Short North with my amazing daughter and my delightfully silly dog. \nI’m an engineer by day but love to get outside and experience the wholeness of the wild\, natural world. I love rock climbing\, mud races\, kayaking\, gardening\, painting\, and improv. My most recent adventure was a 130-mile solo kayaking trip that left from Columbus and followed the Scioto River until it merged into Ohio River. It was as fun as it was challenging\, and the time in nature empowered me to connect to my inner strength and beauty. \nI hope to use my role at Stonewall to do some of my favorite things: connecting with people\, honoring my body through movement\, and being out in nature. I’m so excited to meet you all as we go on outdoor adventures and explore some of the amazing space central Ohio has to offer. \n
